Abstract

ChatGPT, an AI-driven language model developed by OpenAI, represents a significant advancement in natural language processing (NLP) technology. Recently, there has been a growing interest in using AI technologies like ChatGPT to enhance many aspects of language instruction, particularly in the area of writing assistance. The study aims to investigate the impact of ChatGPT on the English writing training by examining data from a diverse set of participants in China and Pakistan. The study uses a mixed-methods approach, with online questionnaires and structured interviews to involve a total of 300 participants, including 40 teachers and 260 students. The findings provide extensive perspectives on the use of ChatGPT, highlighting causes, levels of familiarity, and perceived effects on key aspects of English writing teaching. The quantitative analysis, with a high-reliability score (Cronbach's Alpha =.914), emphasizes the consistency of participant responses. According to the major findings, 44% of participants had formal training in AI-based techniques. The primary reason for this training is concept growth, which motivates 46.2% of students and 70% of teachers. The mean ratings, which range from 3.54 to 4.06, reflect relatively positive assessments of ChatGPT's ability to improve several aspects of English writing education. The findings contribute to the continuing discussions about the use of AI tools in education and underscore the importance of taking a fair and ethical approach to their use.
