A STUDY ON SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF DEEPFAKE TECHNOLOGY AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS
Abstract
The world is constantly bombarded with false information, and a new player in the synthetic media industry, deepfakes, has emerged. Deepfakes are fabricated videos made using deep learning algorithms, often making it impossible to differentiate the real video from the fake. These videos can cause problems and are often used maliciously, such as altering videos of prominent political figures and celebrities. Deepfakes can spread panic and influence elections and political opinions. This paper reviews the technical details of deepfakes, their formal definitions, impact on the world, and the technical process of creating them. The paper also discusses the ethical, legal, and societal challenges posed by the proliferation of deepfake content, including the erosion of trust, manipulation of public opinion, and exacerbation of misinformation campaigns. The paper explores existing and emerging strategies for detecting and mitigating the spread of deepfake content, including technological solutions and policy interventions.
